The R nineT was the ideal model for BMW at its 2014 launch. The back-to-basics boxer, which capitalized on the company’s lengthy heritage entrenched in tradition and racing, was a success with the expanding cafe racer/retro-classic bike market. The 2022 BMW R nineT Pure Scrambler employs the older, air/oil-cooled, “wet head” (liquid-cooled) boxer engine, which has a more conventional appearance. It includes a gasoline tank reminiscent of the original, sporty R90 boxers from the 1970s and a typical round headlight/taillight. Because the R nineT has become so popular, it has been separated into the Pure, Urban G/S, and Scrambler versions. The Pure model is a pared-down, less expensive variation of the R nineT. It has a conventional 43mm front fork and axial-mount Brembo brake calipers instead of the inverted 46mm fork and radial-mount Brembo calipers in the standard R nineT. It also has a conventional 2-into-2 exhaust in place of the standard R nineT’s stylish twin stainless steel muffler.

Updates for 2022
For 2021, various improvements were made to the whole R nineT lineup; however, for 2022, nothing changed. New cylinder heads with enhanced combustion run cleaner increase low-midrange power to meet the tighter Euro 5 emissions regulations. LED units now handle all illumination, the circular analog speedometer and cylinder head covers have been updated, and a USB charging outlet for your phone is now a standard feature. A handwheel spring preload adjustment is also included in a redesigned rear shock with travel-dependent damping. Modernized electronics now include Road and Rain riding modes in addition to Cornering ABS Pro and Dynamic Brake Control (DBC, adjustable engine-braking). Black Storm Metallic, Option 719 Mineral White Metallic/Aurum, Option 719 Night Matte Black/Aluminum Matte, and Option 719 Aluminum are the color options for the R nineT currently available. Teal Blue Metallic Matte, Option 719 Black Storm Metallic/Racing Red, Mineral Gray Metallic, and Option 719 Cosmic Blue Metallic/Light White are the color options for the R nineT Pure.
Pricing and Variants
Option 719 Aluminum Matte paint costs an extra $1,000, Option 719 Mineral White Metallic/Aurum motif costs an additional $1,100, and Option 719 Night Matte Black/Aluminum Matte colorway costs an additional $1,100 to the introductory price of the R nineT. Dynamic Traction Control, adaptive headlights, Dynamic Engine Brake Control, heated steering wheel, cruise control, and Ride Modes Pro are all included in the $1,000 Select Package. Powertrain: Engine, Transmission, and Performance
To meet the tighter Euro 5 emissions regulations, BMW claims 109 horsepower at 7,250 rpm and 85 pound-feet of torque at 6,000 rpm for the most recent R nineT. This engine is an upgraded version of the 1,170cc opposed-twin boxer engine from the previous generation. BMW claims that despite having one less horsepower than the previous model, the middle power is significantly higher and reaches its peak at 500 rpm earlier. Once the surface becomes winding, both the R nineT and R nineT Pure perform admirably. In the aforementioned comparative test, Bradley Adams commented on the handling of the R nineT, saying, “The suspension [is] a wonderful blend between supportive and firm, and the chassis feels better the more you drive it.” The R nineT Pure was unexpectedly good at turning despite having a standard 43mm fork that is more cost-effective (as opposed to the R nineT’s beefier inverted 46mm fork). Kent Kunitsugu noted this in his First Ride Review story: the single shock with rebound damping and spring preload adjustment, along with the nonadjustable 43mm conventional fork, does an excellent job of controlling the chassis while absorbing rough urban pavement. During our half-day ride, we didn’t precisely race through any canyon roads, but the few curvy sections of road we did meet were tackled with zeal, and we had no problems.
Four-piston Brembo calipers with 320mm discs are featured on the R nineT and R nineT Pure, with the R nineT’s calipers having a radial-mount design. The rear braking system comprises a 264mm disc and a two-piston sliding-pin caliper. Both motorcycles have excellent braking performance.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
For the 2021–2022 R nineT or R nineT Pure, there is no mile per gallon estimates.
Ergonomics: Comfort and Utility
The riding positions on the R nineT and R nineT Pure are suitable for daily riding. The footpegs are positioned low enough to allow you plenty of legroom. The traditional tubular handlebar has a significant rise and rearward curve that positions your body in a typical upright stance. Although there is plenty of fore/aft room for the rider and passenger, longer rides will be uncomfortable due to the seat’s firm padding.
Rider assistance electronics, such as the addition of the Road and Rain riding modes, ABS and ABS Pro, and Dynamic Engine Braking Control, will be fitted as standard equipment as part of the improvements to the R nineT and R nineT Pure in 2021. Additionally, the Ride Modes Pro option now makes Dynamic ride mode accessible. In this mode, the traction control, ABS/ABS Pro, and Dynamic Engine Brake Control intervention parameters are postponed to allow the rider to hone their riding techniques on dry pavement. 2022 BMW R nineT Pure Scrambler – Pros and Cons
The R nineT Pure has several positive qualities. The bike rides quite similarly to how its original design was intended. In the most excellent way imaginable, it provides a riding experience pared down to the fundamentals. BMW has thoughtfully organized the catalog so a client may create a personalized configuration right out of the box, or if you want to dress it up a bit with upgrades or extras, you can do that as well. It’s good to see an OEM giving the end user some of that authority back so they may customize or add on as they see appropriate.
The R nineT Pure has the danger of being significantly more expensive when customized. The variant I rode was closer to $16,340 even though the standard model started at $10,995. If I look at this bike through that lens, I have to confess there are many more motorcycles available at that price point that give far more.
What precisely do you have here—a motorbike that values simplicity or a cunning marketing ploy? The reply is “both” The R nineT Pure fulfills its promise of being a basic bike that eschews the unnecessary and concentrates closely on the sensory sensation of riding. However, it does so at a price that I find too high. I agree with the phrase “less is more” often used. How much are you ready to pay for less is the question the potential R nineT buyer must ask. Is being Pure worth the cost?
