To commemorate “100 years of BMW Motorrad,” the 2024 BMW R 12 nineT Heritage Motorcycle is unveiled as the successor to the original R nineT, which debuted in 2013 to mark the company’s 90th anniversary.
Carrying forward a century of tradition and innovation, the new 2024 BMW R 12 nineT Heritage Motorcycle continues the legacy of BMW’s heritage models.
Like its predecessor, the R 12 nineT is a stripped-down, powerful roadster that embraces classic styling while offering extensive options for customization and personalization.
According to Dr. Markus Schramm, Head of BMW Motorrad, the R nineT introduced a fresh customizing philosophy that is now integral to BMW’s heritage line. The R 12 nineT takes that concept further with an even cleaner design, increased modularity, and modern technology.

Engine and Performance
The new 2024 BMW R 12 nineT Heritage Motorcycle features BMW’s air/oil-cooled 1,200cc boxer engine, a continuation of the iconic flat-twin layout first introduced with the original R 32 a century ago. Known for its signature shape, smooth power delivery, distinctive sound, and high performance, this engine remains at the heart of BMW’s motorcycle identity. As with other BMW models, the “12” in the name reflects the engine displacement.
Design and Customization
More refined than ever, the new 2024 BMW R 12 nineT Heritage Motorcycle pairs the commanding feel of the boxer engine with visual elements drawn from historic BMW motorcycles. The minimalist design emphasizes the tank, seat, and rear profile, evoking the classic /5 series and the legendary R 90 S of the 1970s.

Design Chief Edgar Heinrich explains that the tank design features the classic lower curve and knee indentations typical of vintage BMW bikes. The 2024 BMW R 12 nineT Heritage Motorcycle also includes authentic Roadster-style side panels within the frame triangle, reminiscent of the 1970s.
Additional details include a redesigned front fender, a black-trimmed LED headlamp with a light guide element, and dual analog-style gauges. As usual, BMW Motoard offers a wide range of accessories for further customization. The new integrated LED taillight in the seat allows for an easy transition to a “short tail” setup.
