A new query is presented every two years or so. When significant manufacturers like KTM, Ducati, Triumph, or Honda rebuild and rethink their top-tier adventure bike and introduce it to the market with innovative features and a global emphasis, this service is highly sought after. Is it possible that this bike might one day dethrone the BMW 1250 GS Adventure?

All I’ve gotten is a polite “Nearly, but not quite.” No traveler, hiker, or outdoors person has ever convinced anybody that they should be treated like a god everywhere they go. Numerous adventurous multi-taskers have come close to matching the boxer, and some have even surpassed it.

Anyone who has ridden a Bologna factory Multistrada V4 or V4 S with a Granturismo engine knows how fantastic the road-biased adventures are over extended periods, how they can provide the adrenaline rush of a sport bike while still covering the ground, negotiating corners, and gliding like the best sport-tourer. A complex new network of electronic rider aids, DSS EVO suspension, and some innovative and well-calibrated modifications allow the Rally to do all this while remaining fiercely strong when the road turns to dust. The next gas station is some ways away. Similar to a GS, in reality.

Advanced Systems

To offer the V4 Multi 7.9 inches of travel, Ducati reworked its extremely sophisticated semi-active Skyhook DSS EVO suspension by increasing the stroke of the front fork by 1.2 inches and the stroke of the rear shock by 0.8 inches. Ducati has provided a range of seat-height options to suit riders of varying heights, so those under 5’8″ need not worry. That’s gain of 0.6 inches, bringing the total to 9.3 inches of clearance. Seat heights of 33.7 to 34.5 inches (855-875 mm) and 34.9 to 35.6 inches (885-905 mm) are now available in addition to the standard 34.3 to 35 inches (870 to 890 mm). Another option is an ultralow model that measures only 32.5-33.3 inches (82-845mm) in height. In addition, travelers may pick either a higher seat (+0.6 in) or a lower (-0.4 in) than their usual height.

Then there’s Ducati’s Minimum Preload system, which, when you come to a complete stop, releases the tension in the springs and down the bike’s seat. In contrast to the automatic Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 Special’s Adaptive Ride Height system, which has defined options for when and how quickly it operates, as well as the ability to disable it altogether, the Ducati system can only be used manually by pressing a button on the left switch gear at speeds below 71 mph. Activating the “easy lift” feature eases the burden of lifting the bike off the kickstand.

For a shorter rider like me, this is all much unexpected. As you make the turn into the trail, the worry that had been hanging over your head begins to fade.

Large Fuel Tank

Compared to the base Multi, the Adaptive Cruise Control and Blind Spot Detection are now standard equipment; the manually adjustable screen is 0.8 inches (20 mm) higher and broader, and the fuel tank is 7.9 gallons.

Powerful Engine

For the Rally, Ducati has not changed the engine specifications from the Granturismo, which produces 170 horsepower at 10,700 rpm and 89 lb.-ft. Of torque at 8,750 rpm. Every 9,000 miles, or every two years, the oil should be changed, and every 36,000 miles, valve clearance should be checked. The new Diavel V4 has a rear cylinder deactivation mechanism that cuts power to those cylinders whenever the bike is stopped or when the engine speed is below 4,000 rpm. This technique now works with pre-2000 motorcycles as well. There will be some fuel savings, but the most significant benefit will be that the rider’s legs won’t get as heated by the engine on mainly sunny days. The Rally’s aluminum front frame is comparable to a standard motorcycle’s, but that’s where the similarities end.


Even with the added weight of the hard luggage, crash protection, and fog lights on our test bike, the Rally doesn’t seem cumbersome or too heavy. I could even flip up the kickstand without the painful leg stretches required by other adventure machines.

The 6.5-inch widescreen dashboard is neat and easy to read while on the go, and the sleek brushed aluminum fuel tank adds a touch of class. Again, there is a sense of ease about the whole thing. The Rally’s nimble handling on the twisting roads that hug the Sardinian coast belied its full fuel tank. It followed its intended path with pinpoint accuracy and deceptive ease.

Touring Mode

Touring is the best riding mode when distance is an issue since it is geared for covering ground quickly and easily. The Rally operates uniquely, slowing to a relaxed canter that makes the journey seem leisurely despite the rapid velocity you’re traveling.

I opted for the faster Sports setting since it provides a tighter ride and more precision. Over small bumps, the front wheel should be hovering up to two inches off the ground; the throttle should be more direct without abrupt; and rider aids should be dialed down to encourage more forceful inputs.

Firm Grip

Our test bike is equipped with (optional) on-and-off-road Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires, which routinely provide excellent grip and feel on dry roads, even when pushed hard. I didn’t have any issues with the car’s ground clearance (it takes a lot of force on the softer Touring setting for anything to touch), and the steering is so precise and quick that it carries speed like a racehorse on long, constant-radius sweepers. Whether you need to brake hard amid a turn with confidence in the excellent lean-sensitive ABS or you want to hit the throttle early and leave a long black line for other cars to follow, it doesn’t care.

You may choose from four riding modes (Enduro, Sport, Touring, and Urban) and four different power levels (Off-road, High, Medium, and Low). Ducati’s exceptional Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Wheelie Control, and Engine Brake Assist (EBA) are all included. You should also use the vehicle’s cornering headlights, blind spot monitors, adaptive cruise control, and up/down quick shifter.

You may easily customize the rider aids to suit your temperament and riding style. They cover everything (in a good way). They help you chill down and enjoy the simple pleasure of riding a motorcycle. A new and somewhat smoother quick shifter, for instance, may not be a ground-breaking development, but it does contribute to the Multistrada Rally’s unwavering competence.

The next step is the Granturismo V-4 engine itself. In Touring and Urban modes, it feels very much like Ducati’s base model Scrambler in terms of being soft, forgiving, and well-fueled. If you switch to the Sports mode and turn off Ducati Wheelie Control, the Rally’s performance is matched by only the KTM 1290 Adventure R. Most of the test route was on winding coastal roads. Still, when the going became smooth, the 170 hp V4 tightened up and pushed the bike in the way favored by Multistrada owners. Even with a passenger and luggage, the engine is powerful.


Unlike the V4 and V4 S, which use road-biased alloy wheels, the Ducati has spoked rims calculating 19 inches up front and 17 inches in the back. If you’re looking for even greater off-road capability, the Ducati DesertX could be a good option thanks to its longer-travel suspension and 21-inch front tire.

The Rally is an off-road competition, so let’s talk about that. The Rally doesn’t appear concerned with the specifications sheet or complex data, even though its weight has grown to 573 pounds, wet, and its width has expanded due to the larger tank. In reality, it’s too cumbersome and ungainly to be useful out in the wilderness. When it counts, it works perfectly.

Return to feeling as agile and dynamic as you did while riding on the pavement by switching to Enduro mode and hitting the dirt. Even though it’s not a middleweight DesertX and has its limitations, the Scorpion Rally STR rubber on it keeps it incredibly calm and collected when the going becomes tough.
