Competitor Comparison: 2024 Harley-Davidson X 440 vs Hero Mavrick 440
The development of both motorcycles began simultaneously, with the only difference being that the 2024 Harley-Davidson X 440 Heritage Motorcycle was launched earlier than the Hero Mavrick 440. This was expected, as Hero played a key role in developing the Harley model, making it logical for the American-branded motorcycle to debut first.
Although Hero entered the market later at a more competitive price point, it has not achieved the level of impact anticipated. This comparison explores whether it is better to choose the Harley or save money by opting for the Hero model.
Mechanically The Same
The 2024 Harley-Davidson X 440 Heritage Motorcycle stands out as a single-cylinder American motorcycle manufactured entirely in India, specifically for the Indian market. While the overall design and engine concept originated in Milwaukee, the actual development and execution were handled by Hero MotoCorp.
This collaboration allowed Hero to create a completely new engine platform that it could also use in its own motorcycle lineup. As a result, both bikes are powered by a 440cc, solo-cylinder, air/oil-cooled engine that produces 27 bhp and 38 Nm of torque in the 2024 Harley-Davidson X 440 Heritage Motorcycle. The Hero Mavrick 440 uses the same engine, but with a slightly altered tune, producing the same 27 bhp while delivering slightly reduced torque of 36 Nm.
Did It Make Any Difference?
The slight reduction in torque is noticeable, though not very noticeable, in everyday riding. Both motorcycles are designed with a strong, torque-focused character that remains consistent across both models. This shared characteristic is important, as both bikes are positioned to compete with the Royal Enfield Classic 350, which also emphasises torque-rich performance. Therefore, despite minor differences on paper, the real-world riding experience of both motorcycles remains quite similar.
More Premium Than The Other
Being a premium motorcycle brand offers certain advantages, as seen in the 2024 Harley-Davidson X 440 Heritage Motorcycle. It features high-quality metal body panels, a premium USD fork, diamond-cut alloy wheels, and a more visually appealing fully digital instrument console. These features contribute to its higher price range, which starts at ₹2.40 lakh and goes up to ₹2.80 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
In comparison, the Hero Mavrick 440 does not include a 43 mm USD fork and instead comes with a 43 mm telescopic fork. While its body panels may not appear as premium as those on the Harley, the use of plastic components helps reduce overall weight. In fact, with spoke wheels, the Mavrick 440 is nearly 3 kg lighter than the 2024 Harley-Davidson X 440 Heritage Motorcycle.
Although it also features a fully digital instrument console, the layout appears slightly cluttered. The pricing of the Mavrick 440 starts at ₹1.99 lakh and goes up to ₹2.24 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), making it a more affordable and practical alternative.
This Or That?
Choosing the Hero Mavrick 440 over the 2024 Harley-Davidson X 440 Heritage Motorcycle does not result in a significant compromise. Both motorcycles offer a similar riding experience, with the Harley providing a slightly more comfortable ride, while overall performance remains nearly identical. In the broader perspective, there is very little difference between the two, as both are designed to compete in the same segment against the Royal Enfield Classic 350.
Therefore, if brand value is not a major concern and you are looking for a practical and comfortable roadster motorcycle, opting for the Hero Mavrick 440 would still be a sensible choice without missing out on much.
