Powertrain: Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The 2021 Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP Sports Bike we tested on our in-house dyno produced 165.4hp at 12,000rpm and 74.6 pound-feet of torque at 10,580 rpm at the rear tire. The 999cc inline-four engine has been developed by its experts to be very small and light owing to the technology Honda’s MotoGP efforts with the RCV provided.

The RR-R SP is known for its traceable but excellent power delivery and its 14,500 rpm redline will see a burst of top-end power. We noticed that the engine’s power delivery was rideable and produced absolute confidence. According to Road Test Editor Michael Gilbert, “I shut the HSTC and Wheelie Control settings off completely for my final five laps of the day as a testament to the 999cc liquid-cooled inline-tractability four’s and rider friendliness and found the same level of confidence under acceleration as I did with rider aids engaged.”

When Road Test Editor Michael Gilbert drove the European model 2021 Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP Sports Bike around Losail, he noted that Honda “hit a wonderful balance.” The Fire blade is a magnificently profound corner-carver thanks to its brand-new twin-spar frame and swing arm with revised stiffness characteristics. In Losail’s challenging side-to-side transitions, the bike demonstrated its strength by needing minimal effort to shift direction and effortlessly completing midcareer adjustments. A real track weapon and race bike to the core, look where you want to go, and it gets there without a hitch.

The top-tier Ohlins NPX Smart EC 2.0 semi-active gas-charged fork and TTX 36 Smart EC shock transmit excellent feel and support. Through the TFT display’s Objective Based Tuning Interface (OBTi), these suspension parts are readily adjustable.

The rear caliper comes directly from the RCV213V-S, while the Bemba Stylema calipers clamp down on two 330mm front discs. Sport and Track are two ABS settings. However, they don’t even resemble the previous model’s extreme interference.

Ergonomics: Comfort and Utility

As you would guess, the superbike’s ergonomics are aggressive. For a lower body posture that is athletic, the pegs are up and back. The motocross-style handlebar placement, however, is significantly lower and tilted much farther forward, which puts too much strain on the rider’s wrists.

The ‘Blade is outfitted with throttle-by-wire, five power modes, nine levels of Honda’s Selectable Torque management, wheelie control, 2 ABS modes, and three Engine Brake settings because race bikes need to have the best, most efficient lap times possible. Lean and pitch angles are monitored using a Bosch six-axis IMU.

A brand-new full-color TFT display may be adjusted to the rider’s tastes.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Limited warranty with transferable, limitless mileage. One year of coverage is standard, but a Honda Care Protection Plan offers extended protection.

2021 Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP Sports Bike
