Since its debut in 1990, the Harley Davidson Fat Boy has been a cornerstone in The Motor Company’s cruiser collection—perhaps surprisingly so, given its easy-to-mock name, Fat Boy. But what accounts for its enduring appeal? As we noted in its original Fat Boy review from January 1990: “What stands out is the Fat Boy’s monochromatic paint scheme and more robust styling, making it appear more substantial than any other bike in the H-D lineup.” The new 2024 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy 114 Cruiser’s sweeping handlebars, broad aluminum-dish wheels, and, shall we say, “sturdy” proportions have endured through over three decades of evolution.
The original bulky custom icon now shines with bright chrome finishes. It appeals to hot rod enthusiasts who prefer satin chrome and a broad, powerful stance. It commands the road with the largest tires in the Harley lineup. Powered by the Milwaukee-Eight 114 V-Twin engine and fitted with Lakester disc wheels, you can feel the difference when you twist the throttle. Electronic cruise control is now included as a standard feature.
The current generation model, launched in 2018, was initially offered with either 107ci or 114ci Milwaukee-Eight engines until 2020, when the complete 114ci M-8 engine became the sole choice. The M-8 114 is the smallest Big Twin in the range (apart from the M-8 107 fitted to the Softail Standard), delivering a claimed 94 horsepower at 4,750 rpm and 119 lb.-ft. The torque at 3,000 rpm.
Although the 2024 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy 114 Cruiser does not employ the 117ci engine like other cruisers (such as the Breakout 117, Low Rider S, and Low Rider ST), it hardly detracts from its reputation. While designed as a straightforward, no-frills motorcycle, it comes standard with ABS and cruise control. To echo David Edwards’ 1990 final thoughts: “But it still has a silly name.” Ultimately, that has not seemed to affect its popularity.
