2024 Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES DCT Motorcycle Review

The 2024 Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES DCT Motorcycle is purpose-built for riders who prioritise long-distance comfort, strong road performance and refined adventure capability. With increased mid-range torque for confident overtaking, a road-focused 19-inch front wheel, lower seat height and standard-fit Showa Electronically Equipped Ride Adjustment (EERA) suspension, this model delivers exceptional stability and composure on tarmac. A large 24.8-litre fuel tank, combined with a redesigned fairing and adjustable screen, ensures excellent wind protection and extended range for demanding touring days.

More than three decades have passed since the original Honda XRV650 Africa Twin arrived in Europe, and although the modern Africa Twin, launched in 2016 as the CRF1000L, was an entirely new motorcycle, it faithfully carried forward the spirit that made the original so beloved. Central to that appeal has always been the balance between usable power and low overall weight, and that philosophy remains intact today. With its athletic proportions, accessible performance and capable chassis, the Africa Twin has earned a reputation as a true all-rounder, with more than 85,000 units sold worldwide since its return.

Over the years, the platform has steadily evolved. In 2018, both manual and DCT variants gained Throttle By Wire, additional riding modes, expanded Honda Selectable Torque Control and refined intake and exhaust tuning. The introduction of the new 2024 Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES DCT Motorcycle further extended the model’s long-distance credentials with increased fuel capacity, improved wind protection and longer-travel suspension. A major milestone followed in 2020 with the arrival of the larger 1,084cc engine, while the Adventure Sports variant benefited from enhanced touring comfort and the option of Showa EERA electronic suspension.

For 2024, the 2024 Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES DCT Motorcycle receives its most significant update yet. A new 19-inch front wheel, increased torque output, further-refined DCT performance and a more muscular design collectively sharpen its focus as a premium, road-oriented adventure tourer.

2024 Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES DCT Motorcycle – Features and Specs

Chassis

Showa Electronically Equipped Ride Adjustment suspension, previously optional, is now standard equipment on the 2024 Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES DCT Motorcycle. The system automatically optimises damping in real time, adjusting within milliseconds based on vehicle speed, chassis attitude measured by the six-axis IMU, and fork stroke data. This allows the suspension to respond intelligently to changing riding conditions, whether smoothing out low-speed bumps, maintaining stability at higher speeds or controlling dive under heavy braking.

The system offers five selectable suspension modes—Mid, Hard, Soft, Off-Road and User—allowing riders to tailor the ride characteristics directly through the TFT display. The adoption of a 19-inch front wheel with a 110/80 tyre replaces the previous 21-inch setup, improving front-end grip, comfort and confidence during sporty solo riding or fully loaded touring. Suspension travel has been reduced to 210mm at the front and 200mm at the rear, lowering the centre of gravity and improving ground reach and low-speed manoeuvrability.

The steel semi-double cradle frame strikes a careful balance between rigidity and compliance, delivering confident handling on the road while retaining adventure capability. A bolt-on aluminium subframe reduces weight, while the aluminium swingarm, inspired by the CRF450R, enhances rear-wheel traction and feedback. Ground clearance measures 220mm, wheelbase is 1,550mm, and rake and trail are set at 27.5 degrees and 106mm respectively. Wet weight is 243kg for the manual version and 253kg with DCT.

Braking performance is managed by dual 310mm floating front discs with radial-mounted four-piston callipers, while the rear uses a 256mm disc. The IMU-controlled Cornering ABS has been revised for 2024 to complement the new wheel and suspension setup, and riders can select an off-road ABS mode or disable rear ABS entirely when stationary. Tubeless spoked wheels are now standard, simplifying puncture repairs, and the bike rolls on Bridgestone Battlax Adventure A41 tyres, with more aggressive off-road options also approved.

Engine

Power comes from the 2024 Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports ES DCT Motorcycle’s 1,084cc parallel-twin engine, which continues to produce 75kW at 7,500rpm but now delivers increased peak torque of 112Nm at 5,500rpm. Revised intake, combustion, and exhaust tuning significantly improve low- and mid-range performance, making the bike more responsive in everyday riding and during overtaking. The bore and stroke remain unchanged, while a higher compression ratio improves efficiency and output.

A redesigned intake system draws in more air through larger ducts and longer internal trumpets, while updated ECU mapping and injector positioning improve throttle response and combustion efficiency. Honda’s Unicam valve train keeps the cylinder head compact, contributing to mass centralisation and overall balance. The 270-degree crankshaft produces a characterful firing order, while dual balance shafts minimise vibration.

The semi-dry sump design lowers engine height, aiding handling and ground clearance, and the slipper/assist clutch ensures smooth gear changes and controlled downshifts. DCT-equipped models benefit from further refinements for even smoother low-speed operation. A lighter, internally revised exhaust improves drivability while delivering a deeper, more refined exhaust note.
