2024 BMW F 900 XR Adventure Motorcycle – Features and Specs

Styling

I personally lean more toward adventure motorcycles than I do toward sport or naked bikes. Although the R nineT remains my dream machine, adventure tourers generally attract me more. Yet the 2024 BMW F 900 XR Adventure Motorcycle hits the right design note for me. It appears more aggressive than a GS but does not come across as intimidating as an S 1000 RR. Compared with the S 1000 XR—its larger and arguably more menacing sibling—it also feels more approachable.

Due to its prominent front fairings, this model possesses a sharper style than the F 900 R. It features a split headlamp accented by daytime running lights that create a distinct light signature. The overall look is very crisp, and the particular unit I tested was finished in a striking blue shade. Personally, though, I am especially fond of the Triple Black version.

The Saddle

BMW excelled in ensuring this motorcycle’s “touring” aspect stands out. The 2024 BMW F 900 XR Adventure Motorcycle seat provides exceptional comfort for both rider and passenger. The handlebars are positioned so that an average—height rider—5 feet 5 inches—can operate them without strain. Given the bike’s original design for slightly taller individuals, a handlebar riser would enhance this further.

I still had no problem placing my feet on the ground because the seat height is manageable at 775 mm in its lowered configuration. Straight from the factory, it measures 825 mm high, but taller riders can raise it to 870 mm if desired.

The sporty aspect is also evident. While the riding is primarily upright, the footpegs are placed slightly rearward to support a more assertive stance during spirited riding. BMW struck an admirable balance between comfort and sportiness here.

The passenger seat is equally well thought out. Grab bars and footpegs are ideally situated even for smaller pillion riders like my five-foot-tall partner, who experienced no discomfort during our extended trips. Taller passengers should also find the pillion seat comfortable.

Engine Performance

The 2024 BMW F 900 XR Adventure Motorcycle is powered by the same 895 cc liquid-cooled in-line twin-cylinder engine used in the F 900 R. It generates 104 horsepower at 8,500rpm and 92Nm of torque at 6,500rpm, paired with a six-speed manual gearbox.

This engine feels lively and delivers power across the rev range, ensuring effortless overtaking. The clutch and transmission facilitate smooth gear changes, letting you stay within the powerband with minimal effort.

While some motorcycles with comparable displacement or pricing might offer higher performance numbers, the two cylinders in the 2024 BMW F 900 XR Adventure Motorcycle are more than adequate for extended touring. For track days, however, the performance might be less specific.

Ride and Handling

BMW did an impressive job blending the sporty and touring characteristics of the F 900 XR in the saddle, and this quality extends to how it rides. Once on the road, the experience mirrors what you feel while seated.

Although the suspension cannot completely absorb deep potholes—you shouldn’t put the wheels under such strain anyway—it offers a comfortable ride for daily commuting in the city. Even Metro Manila’s uneven terrain is manageable despite the 17-inch wheels wearing relatively slim 120/70 front and 180/50 rear tyres.

Commuting regularly on the 2024 BMW F 900 XR Adventure Motorcycle is not a burden either. The clutch is much lighter than on models like the R nineT, and the bike’s weight is adequately balanced, so moving through traffic does not feel punishing. Additionally, the engine stays relatively calm, which helps during slow-moving congestion.

That said, this motorcycle deserves to stretch its legs. Weekend rides on long open highways are where it truly shines. On properly paved roads, it delivers outstanding comfort, postponing the onset of fatigue even on extended journeys.

It is equally enjoyable on winding roads. Although the riding position is less aggressive than a sport or naked bike, it still allows you to lean confidently into corners.

The braking system deserves special mention. The F 900 XR has dual front discs and a solo rear disc with dual-channel ABS. BMW’s braking components are among the finest in the industry, inspiring confidence with strong stopping power and stability—qualities I value highly in motorcycles of this calibre.

Extra Features

The 2024 BMW F 900 XR Adventure Motorcycle comes with BMW’s signature instrument cluster, which is standard across the Motorrad lineup. This display provides essential riding and trip data and supports smartphone integration through the BMW Motorrad app. Riders can navigate the menus using a control knob near the left grip. The screen is apparent and highly functional on the road.

Touring-oriented additions include hand guards and heated grips. I preferred a slightly larger windscreen, however.

True to BMW form, the bike also features an adjustable clutch lever and a passing-light toggle. To enhance the touring experience further, it is equipped with mounting points for saddlebags at the rear, though proprietary BMW accessories may be required to utilise them fully.

Verdict

The BMW F 900 XR stands out as one of the more composed and less aggressive motorcycles in the BMW Motorrad lineup. Yet it should not be underestimated. It is a thoroughly well-rounded motorcycle.

To rephrase, it is one of the range’s most balanced offerings. It performs admirably within the city and becomes a dream machine on longer weekend rides. Provided that seat height and budget are not concerns—this motorcycle costs $11,695—it is hard to find fault with it.

The BMW F 900 XR is also lighter than the GS models. It is lighter in every sense, both physically and financially. It is ideal for riders who want the upright BMW experience without venturing into off-road territory.
