Powertrain
Powering the 2024 BMW F 900 R Sports Motorcycle is BMW’s 895cc liquid-cooled parallel twin engine. It produces a peak of 105 horsepower at 8,500 RPM and delivers 69 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 RPM. This engine is paired with an all-new six-speed gearbox and includes a slipper clutch for smooth shifting.

Like many other aspects of the F 900 R, this engine is well-balanced, predictable, and delivers power in a linear fashion. While it can rev up to its 9,000 RPM redline, its performance is optimal in the mid-range between 5,000 and 8,000 RPM, where it offers steady and controllable acceleration that won’t catch the rider off guard. The ride-by-wire throttle provides a generally smooth response, though there’s a minor surge when transitioning on and off the throttle at low speeds. Engine braking is robust and helps settle the bike under hard deceleration, which becomes relevant when braking aggressively.
When riding in urban settings, the engine stays pretty quiet. Despite having a 270-degree crankshaft, its sound in the higher revs is mostly a metallic whine—not particularly loud but still engaging. Due to regulatory requirements, the exhaust sound is subdued, which adds to the 2024 BMW F 900 R Sports Motorcycle’s approachable demeanor.
Thanks to its evenly distributed power, the F 900 R is at home cruising city streets as it is carving up mountain roads or stretching out on the highway. This versatility supports the idea that it could be a single-bike solution for many riders. The transmission is exceptionally refined, with smooth shifts and easy neutral engagement even while stopped—an area where BMW excels compared to other European brands.
When placed next to other engines in its category, this middleweight doesn’t dazzle with explosive performance but doesn’t fall short. It lacks the raw punch of a V-twin or a big single-cylinder engine and doesn’t have the screaming top-end of a triple or inline-four. Instead, BMW has engineered a balanced and adaptable engine paired with an excellent gearbox ideal for a wide variety of riding styles, even if it doesn’t dominate in any specific area.
Chassis & Brakes
The 2024 BMW F 900 R Sports Motorcycle has a non-adjustable front fork and a rear shock for preload and rebound adjustments. Although the range of adjustments is limited, the bike performed impressively across different riding conditions, even for a rider weighing 190 pounds. It’s important to note that this bike isn’t exceptionally light—it weighs in at 465 pounds wet—and with a conservative rake angle, it requires a bit of effort through the wide handlebars to switch directions quickly. However, this heft enhances overall chassis stability, giving the bike a planted and confident feel.
In city riding, the suspension setup leans toward the firm side. When navigating over cobblestone streets and speed bumps in Portugal, the ride felt rough and not especially enjoyable—this type of terrain clearly isn’t its strong suit, although it remained perfectly manageable. At lower speeds, the bike handles well, with slightly slower steering than some rivals, which adds a level of forgiveness when performing tight turns or slow maneuvers.
The chassis truly shines on the highway or traveling at Autobahn speeds. Wind blasts from passing trucks, uneven pavement, and potholes do not unsettle the bike, and it continues to feel more stable and secure the faster it’s pushed.

One of the most pleasant surprises was how well the 2024 BMW F 900 R Sports Motorcycle handled winding mountain roads. While it’s not designed to be a track bike, and isn’t likely to steal the spotlight at a race circuit, it excelled when leaned hard into corners, even during aggressive trail braking. For a machine clearly engineered with more sport than comfort in mind, it proved highly capable in spirited riding scenarios. With its wide handlebars and in the hands of a skilled rider, the 2024 BMW F 900 R Sports Motorcycle can confidently carve corners, maintain a firm grip on less-than-perfect roads, and deliver plenty of fun.
Braking performance is solid, thanks to the inclusion of Brembo front calipers—likely M4 units similar to those on BMW’s GS series—paired with 300mm discs. This setup is sufficient for anything a street rider might demand from this machine. The rear brake also has a decent feel, although ABS intervention can somewhat limit its effectiveness.
Electronics
Regarding pricing and optional features, BMW applies the same approach to its motorcycles as its cars. As a result, the 2024 BMW F 900 R Sports Motorcycle has several electronic upgrade packages that include features like additional ride modes, electronically adjustable suspension, an up/down quickshifter, and advanced traction control systems. However, the base model we tested came without any of these extras.

This version includes a 5-inch TFT display (featuring an anti-glare coating, which looks excellent), two ride modes—Rain and Road—traction control that can be turned off, and ABS that always remains active.
Did we miss having more advanced electronics? Not particularly. The Road throttle map worked well in every condition we encountered, and traction control could be turned off for a more playful ride or when aiming for front-wheel lightness. That said, the overall character of the 2024 BMW F 900 R Sports Motorcycle is more grounded and composed rather than wild and wheelie-prone like an MT-09. Our only real complaint was the inability to disable rear-wheel ABS, which would have allowed for some fun rear-end slides.
