As with the 2023 season, Ducati will be the only authorized manufacturer of motorcycles used in the FIM Enel MotoETM World Cup, the MotoGPTM World Championship’s electric division. Redefining the future of electric mobility on two wheels while adding a new, exciting chapter to Ducati’s illustrious racing history is an exhilarating technological challenge. Beginning in 2023, Ducati will serve as the only official supplier in a global championship for the first time in its history. It will do it on a brand-new motorcycle: the first Ducati racing model with an all-electric drivetrain. An unparalleled challenge
Compared to a traditional motorcycle, an electric bike presents unique technical and engineering hurdles. However, Ducati engineers and designers have collaborated over the last several months to discover the ideal solutions.
An unprecedented motorbike
The racing industry has traditionally been Ducati’s testing ground for new abilities and technical advancements. An innovative electric motorcycle that combines never-before-seen technology solutions for the motor, battery pack, and inverter is now available.
The development of the MotoE continues unabated with track testing in addition to the work inside the Ducati facility. The prototype was driven by test and Ducati’s professional riders as they navigated some of Italy’s most significant circuits’ bends.
THE PROTOTYPE Code-name: V21L
The first electric Ducati vehicle stands out from other recent examples of zero-emission race motorcycles. It has never-before-seen technological solutions for the battery pack, motor, and inverter that were created in complete collaboration by Ducati and Ducati Corse experts.
The prototype of Ducati’s first electric motorcycle, designated by the initials “V21L” in Borgo Panigale, will compete in the FIM MotoETM World Cup beginning in 2023. The Bologna-based motorcycle manufacturer will partner in this competition as its sole supplier, fielding 18 motorcycles on the track throughout each race weekend.
- Battery pack: The battery pack, which on the Ducati MotoE is distinguished by a form mainly created to follow the natural course of the central section of the bike, is the most conspicuous and distinctive component in terms of masses and proportions.
- Chassis: The battery pack’s carbon fiber casing functions as a stressed component of the chassis, much like the Ducati Panigale V4 engine, and it weighs 8 lbs. with an aluminum monocoque front frame.
- Powertrain: The Ducati MotoE has a total weight of 496 lb. (26 lb. less than the minimum weight required by Dorna and FIM for a motorcycle capable of finishing the race distance) and can produce a maximum of 110 kW (150 horsepower) and 140 Nm of torque.
- Cooling system: A highly developed and effective liquid cooling system with a double circuit is used to cool the prototype’s components to accommodate the varied thermal requirements of the battery pack and the motor/inverter unit.
A United Team of Ducati Engineers and Ducati Corse
The Borgo Panigale motorcycle maker assembled a team of designers from Ducati and Ducati Corse to construct the MotoE prototype, generating an exceptional combination of abilities. The process used to create the bike was the same as that used to develop production motorcycles, which sparked tight teamwork and new ways of thinking and designing among team members due to the project’s technical challenges.
Designed by Centro Stile Ducati
The design of the MotoE was handled by the Centro Stile Ducati, which also produced the bike’s livery. In contrast, Ducati R&D dealt with all project management tasks and the design and simulations of the electric drivetrain.
Developed by Ducati Corse
Ducati Corse worked on an attractive design of the electrical components, the software controls and tactics, the simulations of the motorcycle’s dynamics and aerodynamics, and, ultimately, the bike’s construction, testing, and data collection procedures. The riders Michele Pirro, Chaz Davies and Alex De Angelis assisted the test crew, supervised by Marco Palmerini, as they worked on the circuit using the same techniques employed in MotoGP.

Additionally, when you initially open the throttle, the ergonomics and connection are comparable to those of a MotoGP bike. I would have believed I was riding my bike if it weren’t for how quiet it was and because we limited the power for this test to only 70%.
