Cylinder Head
The Unicam® cylinder head has a decompressor counterweight on the left side of the camshaft, helping to stabilize combustion at very low rpm and providing smooth, controllable power when exiting corners. It also prevents stalling. The magnesium head cover has a thin-wall design to save weight. The central oval exhaust port allows efficient gas flow and consistent torque across all revs. Lubrication is managed by a five-hole piston oil jet and dual 12 mm scavenge pumps.
Intake
The downdraft intake design improves airflow for powerful torque at low rpm. A 4.1-litre air boot ensures strong intake flow, and the airbox can be accessed easily by removing a single side-panel bolt. The 60-degree injector angle sprays fuel to the back of the throttle butterfly, cooling the intake path for greater efficiency and torque feel.
Exhaust
The complete exhaust system weighs only 8.5 pounds. The centralized exhaust port keeps the header and muffler close to the bike’s centerline for better movement and balance. Two resonators—one after the front bend and another near the muffler—help increase power and reduce noise.
Clutch
The hydraulic clutch uses eight plates and has a large oil capacity, giving it excellent durability, smooth performance, and a light lever pull.
Electronics
A gear-position sensor allows three ignition maps—one for gears one and two, another for three and four, and a third for fifth. You can switch between Smooth, Standard and Aggressive modes using a handlebar-mounted button to adjust for riding style and track conditions.
Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC)
This system has three levels of traction control. It monitors rpm spikes and adjusts ignition timing and fuel injection to improve grip.
- Mode 1 provides light intervention for maximum control in tight corners.
- Mode 2 offers medium response for balanced traction.
- Mode 3 engages quickly for slippery or muddy terrain.
- The HSTC can also be turned off if desired.
HRC Launch Control
This feature helps riders achieve strong starts, including three levels to choose from.
- Level 1: 9,500 rpm for high traction and skilled riders.
- Level 2: 8,500 rpm for general high-traction use.
- Level 3: 8,250 rpm for slippery surfaces or new riders.
Engine Mode Select Button (EMSB)
The EMSB lets you adjust the engine’s power delivery instantly:
- Mode 1: Standard
- Mode 2: Smooth
- Mode 3: Aggressive
Chassis / Suspension
All heavy parts are positioned centrally and low in the frame for accurate cornering and stable high-speed control. The setup also reduces squat under acceleration and pitch under braking.
Frame / Swingarm / Subframe
The aluminium frame uses narrow main spars and optimized reinforcement ribs behind the pivot plate, keeping frame weight to only 18.5 pounds. Lateral rigidity provides smooth cornering while vertical stiffness ensures strength. The simple subframe weighs just 2 pounds, and the narrow swingarm improves rut clearance while maximizing rear grip and handling.

Suspension
The front suspension features a 49 mm inverted Showa® coil-spring fork with gas-liquid separation for precise damping. The triple clamps are designed for ideal stiffness and cornering feel. At the rear, a Pro-Link® system uses a Showa shock absorber with adjusters on the right side and an ultra-light steel spring. The geometry reduces the rear squat during acceleration.
Wheels
The black D.I.D. rims are lightweight and durable. Petal brake rotors improve cooling, while a low-expansion front brake hose ensures consistent brake feel. The CRF450R-S comes equipped with Dunlop Geomax MX33 tyres, designed for soft-to-intermediate terrain with superior traction, slide control, and durability.
Design
The 2024 Honda CRF450R-S Dirt Motorcycle has a slim, streamlined body with smooth lines between the radiator shroud and side panels, allowing easy rider movement and better control. Each radiator shroud is made as a single piece for strength, and the air-outlet vents are shaped using Computational Fluid Dynamics to improve cooling. Radiator grills are optimised for maximum airflow.
The seat base includes rearward-facing tongues and front-mounted tabs for quick installation. Acceleration forces help keep it secure while riding. The titanium fuel tank holds 1.7 gallons and keeps the weight low.
Maintenance is simple, with only eight bolts securing the main body panels and seat, all using 8 mm heads.
A single switch cluster manages engine stop, ride modes, and HSTC functions. The starter and new HRC Launch Control are mounted on the right side of the Renthal Fatbar handlebar. The clamp has two mounting points and can be rotated, giving four handlebar positions over a 26 mm range.
Aluminum Frame
The twin-spar aluminium frame places the rear shock lower, improving airflow to the airbox and lowering the centre of gravity. This design enhances traction, steering precision and overall handling.
Low-Mount Battery Box
The low-mounted battery box helps lower the bike’s centre of gravity, improving agility and cornering response.
Dialled-In Suspension Settings
The 2024 Honda CRF450R-S Dirt Motorcycle has suspension settings designed to work perfectly with the chassis and engine, offering balanced performance and smooth front-to-rear stability.
Showa Spring Fork
The 49 mm Showa fork uses a spring design for improved feel, better resistance to bottoming, and more accurate steering feedback.
Swingarm
The swingarm is engineered using a special fabrication process that fine-tunes flexibility for better traction and cornering precision.
Single-Muffler Exhaust
The lightweight pressed-alloy muffler is shaped for better ergonomics and reduced weight while maintaining a central, balanced position.
HRC Launch Control
This ECU program gives you perfect starts—just select your mode, hold the throttle, release the clutch, and the CRF450R-S does the rest. It gives you a significant advantage off the line.
Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC)
The handlebar button near the clutch activates Honda Selectable Torque Control. Choose between three traction levels depending on conditions to get ideal grip and stability.
Engine Mode Select Button
The EMSB allows riders to switch between Standard, Smooth, and Aggressive power settings with a simple press of the thumb.
260mm Front Brake
The large 260 mm front brake disc offers powerful, precise stopping. The unique design reduces weight, and both brakes include protective guards.
Titanium Fuel Tank
The titanium fuel tank is light, strong, and thinner than the old plastic version while keeping the same fuel capacity. It also helps centralise weight for better balance.
Electric Starter
The electric starter eliminates the need for a kick starter, saving weight and improving convenience. The lithium-ion battery is lightweight and efficient, making starting quick and easy.
450cc Unicam Engine
The 450 cc Unicam engine combines single- and double-overhead-cam benefits. This design creates a compact, light engine with a lower centre of gravity and high compression efficiency for stronger performance.
Titanium Intake Valves
The lightweight titanium intake valves reduce mass, allowing smaller springs and a shorter overall engine height.
Downdraft Fuel Injection
The downdraft fuel-injection system increases power and precision, giving explosive torque, especially at race starts.
Double-Spray Injector Settings
The injector sprays fuel twice per cycle, improving atomization and midrange power without added weight or complexity.
Dunlop MX33 Tires
Developed with top racers, the Dunlop MX33 tyres offer superior traction, durability, and feedback on soft to intermediate terrain.
Cylinder Head Layout
The Unicam cylinder head uses a finger-follower rocker system that combines the efficiency of a DOHC engine with the compact size of a SOHC design.
Compression Ratio
The 13.5:1 compression ratio improves combustion and increases power output for stronger acceleration.
“In Mould” Graphics
The “in-mould” graphics are durable and long-lasting, keeping the bike looking new through races and rides.
Skid Plate
The lightweight skid plate protects the engine and lower frame from impacts and debris.
Renthal “Fatbar”
The Renthal Fatbar aluminium handlebar has a proven bend for comfort and control, making it a favourite among Honda riders.
